What is Rugged Device Management?
01 November 2022
Rugged devices are known for being long-lasting and reliable
even in harsh conditions. However, no matter how physically rugged a device is,
there are other areas which are less rugged such as its security protocols and network updates. The overall management of
the device has an impact on the product’s life cycle so these areas need
additional attention to ensure they stay up and running, and the device remains
a benefit to a business.
This is where rugged device management comes in. Device
management is the implementation and maintenance of a device, whether that’s a
rugged handheld, wearable or truck mount. This could include administrative
tasks to optimise device performance.
Often, device management can be run through a management
system (such as SOTI) which
tracks and connects all of the devices together. This system ensures that all
devices are running as efficiently as possible and all devices are updated at
once. Device management systems are more of common when managing larger device
estates. On the other hand, small device estates could be managed without such
as system as long as there is some accountability within the business.
Why is rugged device management important
There are many benefits to rugged device management,
including security protocols and device optimisation.
Security
Similarly to consumer devices, rugged devices can also come
with security concerns if protocols are not followed or updates are not carried
out. As these devices are often used by businesses, a breach in security can
potentially have a long-lasting effect on the business, so it’s important for
regular management of security for both the device and its data.
To keep the device safe, security needs to be kept up to
date and device movements need to be tracked. As a rugged device is not
normally used within a traditional office setting, its movements within a
warehouse or between staff need to be monitored to ensure the device is not
misplaced or misused. If it is, having the device-specific security will
prevent anyone accessing the network who shouldn’t be and allows for the
business to potentially track where it was last used and its movement from
there.
System
Not updating a rugged device’s operating system (OS) can
lead to issues. Not only do those looking for unauthorised access use legacy OS
vulnerabilities to access the system, but some OS features will not be
accessible to users on non-updated devices.
Legacy OS has become an issue for many who use Windows OS since
it has recently been phased out and Android has been introduced. Although Android comes with many benefits for businesses, it also means that any Windows
devices will lack ongoing support and updates that could make the existing
rugged devices inefficient. This in the long term could impact a business’
operational efficiencies.
Remote operations
If
a rugged device is used out in the field or there is a central IT hub that manages several sites, remote working, device
configuration and troubleshooting all need to be easy and efficient. A lot of
time can be saved for workers if their device automatically updates, such as
with new paperwork that’s needed, and if the rugged device configures apps, the
Wi-Fi connection and VPN settings.
Remote troubleshooting can also be a valuable time saver for
all staff, whether they are field or office based. Solving any issues in real-time
can eliminate downtime to repair the device. Remote troubleshooting and repair
can also reduce the need for staff to be office/warehouse based to fix the
issue such as warehouse staff having to move from their current job and
location to a central hub for repairs.
How we can help
It’s important to keep all rugged devices and their features
optimised for ongoing business use and to ensure operations remain efficient.
Rugged device maintenance is key for this as although they’re rugged on the
outside, their technology and security still need to be kept up to date.
Here at TouchStar, we’re here to offer ongoing support for
your rugged devices. Get in touch today to find out how we can support you and your business.
